Not sure where to start with your garden work this year? Don’t worry! As The Flowerhouse gears up for our grand opening in April, we have a lot of prep to do. Aside from planting, seeding, and growing, we’re also working to get our retail space in perfect shape for our customers on opening day!
However, we know we’re not the only ones busy this time of the year. As spring rapidly approaches, so does peak gardening season! This is the time to start prepping your garden for the next season ahead.
If you’re feeling apprehensive or unsure about the next steps to take with your garden to prepare for spring, here’s some helpful advice to ensure you’ll be ready when we open in April!
Firstly, winter likes to leave gardens looking rough. Whether you’re hoping to grow plants in raised beds or in the ground, cleaning up is essential to create a fresh environment for new plants to grow! This includes removing debris, pulling weeds, and top-dressing with compost if the ground is thawed enough. Here in Chilliwack we certainly had a mild winter, so a lot of the steps we’d normally be doing in mid-March can already start being completed now!
As for any perennials—plants that stay in the garden year-round—it’s time to start pruning and dividing them if they’re overgrown. Lots of work in the garden at this time of year revolves around ensuring that it will be ready for planting in a few weeks, and caring for perennials makes more space for other plants while also improving the overall look of your garden.
March is also the optimal time to start planting bare-root plants such as roses, fruit trees, or berries. This time of year marks the end of their dormant season—meaning this is the time to plant them so that they’ll start growing in the spring. “Bare-root” means the plants are not potted. Rather, they are taken from their growing environment and the soil is removed from their roots. This means that when they are planted, bare-root plants can acclimate to new soil conditions and build root systems more efficiently.
Great gardens start with prep before peak gardening season. By getting your garden in tip-top shape now, you’ll be prepared to fill it with colour this spring. Our goal is to provide locally grown product that will be able to thrive right here in the Fraser Valley, and with a combined total of 40+ years of experience we’re here to answer any questions you may have. The Flowerhouse will be your number one destination for hanging baskets, bedding plants, and more to take your garden to the next level this spring!
